Chuck: Hello Bloggaday readers and welcome to our second Song of the Week

Tom: That’s right Chuck, but this is the third appearance of the Song of the Week on the Bloggaday.

Chuck: Joining us today is the author of the Bloggaday and has the final word on who get’s crowned as THE Song of the Week.

David: Thanks a lot, Chuck. I’m thrilled to be here. I do have to say though, I pictured this place to be a little less…

Chuck: Impressive?

David: Imaginary…

Tom: Yeah, we have to work on that. Hopefully after a few weeks, we’ll move up and get the old set from those Poetry Wed-Nes-Day pricks.

Chuck: Language, Tom!

David: You know, I have some pull around here, and Performer of the Month could use some announcers.

Tom: That would be great, David.

Chuck: We really couldn’t impose like that.

Tom: Idiocy, Chuck!

David: It’s cool, guys. It’s not like I’m making any promises.

Chuck: At any rate, we should probably get on with the Song of the Week

Tom: So, David. Why don’t you tell us about some of the top contenders for this week’s Song?

David: Well, as you predicted last time, my choice was between a few Rock Sugar songs.

Chuck: Well, we still have a few hundred words to fill, would you like to talk about them a little?

David: Sure. First off, “Crazy Girl.” It mashes “Crazy Train” by Ozzy and “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield. I’m not familiar Springfield’s body of work, but it works being laid on top of “Crazy Train.”

Next, “Here Comes the Fool You Wanted.”

Tom: Quite the mouthful there David.

David: Yeah, some of their titles tend to go on for a while. It really describes the complexity of the song though.

Chuck: What do you mean, “complexity?”

David: Well, a lot of their song only have 2 or 3 songs, but this one has 4 – Wanted Dead or Alive” (Bon Jovi) + “Here Comes the Rain Again” & “Sweet Dreams…Are Made of This” (Eurythmics) + “Nobody’s Fool” (Cinderella). And you really hear it all in an amazing richness, but it’s not distracting. Definitely one of their masterpieces.

I’m also a fan of “Dreaming of a Whole Lotta Breakfast”: “Dream On” (Aerosmith) + “Breakfast in America” (Supertramp) + “Whole Lotta Love” (Led Zeppelin), but you can’t go wrong with “Dream On” and “Whole Lotta Love.” I don’t think I’ve ever heard “breakfast in America” though.

Chuck: I’m sorry David, but we are quickly running out of characters here.

David: Oh, sorry. Well, I guess I’ll just choose from those three then. As you can probably tell from my description, the Song of the Week is…

Bloggaday 119 – My Lego Stop-Motion Entry



The other day, I updated my status and sent a twitter out into the ethers about a video up on youtube, so I figured I might as well make a Bloggaday post for it.
Scott Sigler, New York Times Bestselling author, is releasing a new book. You can find his site at http://www.scottsigler.com/ , but as far as it concerns me at the moment, that’s not the important link. To launch his book he shot what would be a movie trailer for his book and put it up on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRY9eWlmBWM&feature=player_embedded . Which I happened to be on twitter when he posted it, so I got a chance to take a pic of this


Anyways, he started a contest where his junkies (fans) could create fan videos from a set a scripts he released for the book. A slightly… I just walked away for a few hours and I have no idea why I wrote “A slightly.” So I see that and think, cool. I could probably to a lego thing and it would be pretty cool. I kind of just wrote it off though.
He had another contest a few weeks ago for us to design the team logos for his new book, The Starter. I came up with a bunch of designs, but since my PC kind of crapped out on me, I didn’t have any software to make them look all nice and shiny. So I never entered the contest. This new contest kind of had that same kind of thing.
A week before the deadline comes (deadline is June 14th {tomorrow}), and there are only 5 entries. “Well man, there are 5 prize packages at stakes and there are only 5 entries with a week left. I’ve got to get some hucklebuck and put a video out.”
So I figured out what I was going to do and planned to do it. The first thing I had to do was build a contraption to hold my iPhone. Since I was going to have to bust out my old legos, I figured I would use my old bionicles to hold my phone. This ended up being the result


Looks like a good and proper Sigler piece if you ask me.
That was a pretty quick build though. I had to wait a couple of day to start filming though, and I had to do it at night. It’s the only way to control the light over the period of time it takes to make such a film.
I recorded the audio, but then came all of the decision about filming. I heard 30 frames a second for stop-motion clamation would make it seemless, but that sounded high. I figured 10 fps, but that was going to take too long for a nearly 3 minute video. I figured the frame count for 5 fps and where I would need to be after every paragraph. Before I started though, I decided to go to 2 frames and readjusted my count. I started filming and got about 20 pictures in and decided that it would take too long. It was already 12:30 and I wasn’t up for that much work. I ended up just going to 1 frame per second. If I had the time though, 2 frames per second would have been perfect.
The set itself was kind of overkill, but this is the first time I’ve ever done anything like this, and I thought it would be much more elaborate than it ended up being. Here are 3 shots in panorama and a video of it.

I also made a crane setup for some shots.


Unfortunately, the app that zooms in was too much work inside the contraption I built for it, and I didn’t end up using it that night. When I looked at my footage the next day however, I was missing 5 pictures from early in the video, so I had to set some of my scene back up, and I ended up using the crane for my first 5 pictures of the film.
I was hoping that I could do the video without using any pegged lego ground, but that just wasn’t working out, do I ended having to break out a large green piece that I had. Unfortunately, it had a river running through it, so I had to try to shoot around it.
There are definitely some things I would have liked to have done better, but considering this was my first run at something like this, I’m rather proud of it.

Bloggaday 118 – My Guide to Efficiency Management and Boredom

I find the folks who go all wallcrawler when they get stuck at home kind of funny. Apparently, both of my folks are like that. My mom took the week off with furloughs and to take her mom on a Mother’s Day thing. Yesterday, she had one of those days. She rearranged the furniture in the living room and throughout the day, she did that half-napping thing where you don’t really go to sleep, but you just kind of go in and out.
My dad is even worse. He’s always at work. Even on his days off, he’ll go into work on his own time to do stuff that needs to be done. He actually stayed home a couple of days the last week or two, and it drove him nuts. He would wander the hallways, cries of boredom echoing throughout the house.
These are examples of people who haven’t honed their home-staying skills. Mine on the other hand? They have been forged in the jaded heat of boredom.
Now I’m laying some major insight on you here. Don’t go misusing it or selling it. I actually increase stimuli and reduce productivity. It’s actually rather simple. I watch and listen to exorbitant amounts of TV, music, and other forms of audio media. The thing is though, I don’t like to just watch TV. I won’t just veg out on the couch. I’ll start writing or busying myself with some other activities.
The beauty of this plan is the fact that the productivity of the secondary activity (such as the writing of this Bloggaday) is reduced to about 30% of normal. This means that I never really get anything done, but I’ve always got something to do. So I’m always doing something. Sometimes though, the number of even decent shows on TV goes down, or I manage to increase my efficiency somehow. I’ll let you know now, this will happen to you and, then you’re left without enough to do. If efficiency tips above 50%, than you have to pull out the big guns. To deal with that, here’s what you’ve got to do: start writing a blog a day, every day.
If that doesn’t stonewall your free time then yours is a case that not even I can fix. May god have mercy on your soul… as he plays paddleball with it. Come on, how board does he have to be? Bet you didn’t know that, did you? Even if you don’t start my program, then you’ll have that nugget to bust out at social events*

Bloggaday 117 – Podcasting Part 3 of 3

This has been the age of the trilogy. My workout Bloggadays were a set of three. My leverage fic will also be three posts long. Today is the third and hopefully final Bloggaday post about podcasts.
I’m not only a consumer of podcasts, I’ve actually made a couple myself, and I plan on being involved in more in the future.
My first venture into podcasting was The Davidian Cast. It lasted 17 episodes up to the Halloween special, but then I just podfaded. The podcast included story content, poems, and I think even an essay or two towards the end there. Sadly, my urge to podcast got a little ahead of my writing. The actual story content was all a bunch of first-run junk that I scribbled out to get content up. You know what though, I did enjoy “3 The Sect of ZAP: Veli Origins” at http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/3-the-sect-of-zap-veli-origins/id287931114?i=36207848
I have to warn you though, as the description says, it’s uniquely profanierfic. Veli is a character from a webcomic I wanted to start. Unfortunately, I’m not an artist, so I had to turn it into a series of vignettes. ZAP was the name of the story and “sect” was the tag for story content. It went with the motif that I was trying to set up for the podcast. I ended up using a site that offered a limited storage for free. I would have had to of start a new feed anyways.
That run lasted from August 9th 08 to October 31st 08. After something of a hiatus, I started The DJ Show June 14th in 09. Only a couple of episodes in, I ran into some problems. I tried continuing it on youtube, but it all became a bit too much hassle. I tried using ourmedia, which offers free, unlimited storage, but there were just way too many problems. Hopefully in the future, I can start the DJ Show back up when I actually have some good content for it. I might make it a Youtube exclusive show until I find a good, and preferably free, hosting site. That or I will just start a new feed everytime I fill the quota.
As I said earlier, I have hopes for my podcasting future. When I decided to kick off the Bloggaday, I figured I would start another podcast of me reading the Bible and adding my own thoughts and annotations. I figured I would be able to generate content for the Bloggaday pretty easy and quickly, but I haven’t done so yet, and I’m not sure if or when I’ll get around to it.
Lastly, I will be returning to the Sand Canyon Review to be their PR guy in the spring. Something I pushed for during class was that we start a podcast. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. Since I’ll be the actual group leader next time, I’ll make sure it happens for the next issue. 500*

Bloggaday 116 – The Podcast Bloggaday Part 2 of 3

Alright, we’re coming off of another break, but this is the continuation of the podcast Bloggaday.*
Before I get into that, I’m going to give a quick workout update/tip. As for the tip part, don’t do leg exercises. And the update? I did a second workout Monday, and I incorporated a little bit of legwork into it this time. The day after, I was a bit sore, but after walking all day and having to do some running and running up the stairs… oh the stairs… Well, after that, my legs just went to shite. My legs were just gone. It’s Thursday, and I’m still as sore as I should be the day after I work out. Anyways, that’s all.
I want to start off with a little info on the podcasts I listen to. The big three that I’ve been a dedicated fan of are The 40 year Old Boy, Scam School, and Scott Sigler’s various podio stories.
First off, Mike Schmidt’s 40 Year Old Boy Podcast. I am a huge fan. I think this is the only podcast that I’ve tried to listen to every week since I started listening to it… I think. My memory isn’t that great, but I don’t recall going long periods of time without listening to his podcast like the other two.
Schmidt has basically put out an episode a week for 2+ years. There has been a couple clipshows and whatnot, but I’m rather amazed at the numbers of hours he puts out consistently. I actually relate to him quite a bit, and I think that’s what surprises me so much about the amount of podcasting hours he’s put out. And the new website? My Scam School watching habits are a bit different. I’ll usually go a month without watching it and then bust out all of the weekly episodes in a sitting. The host, Brian Brushwood also has a show called NSFW on the Twit. It’s basically a live ustream of him and his buddies bullshitting, taking call-ins, and playing the occasional game. I’ve seen several episodes of the previous incarnation, the BBLive as a podcast, but I am a child of the Tivo, and I don’t do well trying to catch a live broadcast.
My last regular podcast is all of the stuff coming from Scott Sigler. When I first found his podiobooks, I burned through them, and I went through them fast. I ended up catching him just before he released Nocturnal. Just in time, if I remember to hear about the contest he had going and miss the deadline. Again, the amount of content he pushes out is staggering. Couple that with the amount of writing he does in a year, and it’s rather awe-inspiring. He currently has a deal with Crown, a big publishing house, and he is also self-publishing his Rookie line of books. That basically means he fronts the money for the publishing. He covers that cost with a preorder though. He needs to sell half of those in preorder to cover all of the costs, which he did for his first book. I don’t think his second has gone to preorder yet, or it just went to it.
I don’t recall picking many folks to strive for, but Scott Sigler falls into this category. He seems to have the work ethic and creativity that really is what it seems to take to be successful in the new world of publishing.

Blood mixed with the young man’s saliva and ran a trail from his lips. A cough cut the stream as a voice came, “Get him up.”
Men in suits grabbed his arms and craned him to his feet, revealing more a boy than a man. “Alright, alright. I’ll get you your money. I just need a little bit more time.”
The man’s head dropped before he turned back to the trio. “You might want to hurry, Mr. Ford. You have the unfortunate luck of owing me the wrong amount of money. He grabbed a handful of scraggly hair and continued into gazeless eyes, “You owe me enough money to physically intervene, but it’s small enough that the message it sends for us to kill you… Well, that does more for our reputation than taking that piss-poor excuse of collateral you put up.” He clinched the hair and sent another blow to the boy’s gut.
As he turned and walked away, he said with a wave of his hand, “You know what to do with him.”
As they began to drag the flailing boy, one of the suited men hooked the sledge resting against the door.

Clad in black but behind a white collar, the baritone rang to a full room. “Nathan was a fine young man, and that is how we should remember him. Some people have expressed to me that they would like to pay their last respects in private, so I’d like to ask all of you to join me in the reception area and celebrate the LIFE of Nathan Ford.”

An older gentleman, grey offering a distinguished shock to either temple, retrieved a browning baseball from his jacket pocket and admired it. He held the door open after a woman left the room. With a nod he went in after she cleared the way.
A few moments after he disappeared, a boy, no more than twelve or thirteen, scanned the reception room from the same doors. He pried one open and slipped in. He ducked in between the rows of pews as the man began to speak, “Hey, Nate. I know it’s been a while. I’m just sorry I couldn’t come sooner or on better terms.”
The man covered the last step to the coffin with a catch in his throat. “I know how much you always loved this ball, and every time I looked at it, I just think about that time at the bar. I don’t know. I always figured I would give it to you sooner or later, so I guess this is my last chance.”




Alright, if any of you have ever seen the T.N.T show, Leverage, you’ve probably already guessed that this was a Leverage-based fic. Over the next two weeks, I’ll post the other two parts on Wednesdays. This was a bit different from what I usually do, so it was rather fun.*

Bloggaday 114 – The Podcast Bloggaday
Alright, this is partly a new Bloggaday and also a continuation from the past few days.
I’ll start by takin a few more whacks at the downed horse. Actually, I think I’ll spring it on you later.
Many a moons ago, I stumbled on podcasts. Sadly, I don’t remember what the first podcast was I listened to, but I’ve been listening to them rather consistently since then. Heck, I’ve even reinstated my Podcaster of the Year award segment for the Bloggaday.
Despite my championing of podcasts, I don’t listen to that great of a variety of them. I only consistently listen to maybe 3 or 4, including Brian Brushwood’s Scam School, Mike Schmidt’s 40 Year Old Boy, Scott Sigler’s 8 books and 213 various short stories that he puts out every for the past 27 years. I’ve been a little inconsistent lately, but The Flashback podcast for Phil Hendrie’s radio show is also great.
Other podcasts getting my attention lately include NSFW (formerly the BBLive show by Brian Brushwood, Jake Bible’s Dead Mech, Greg Crites feed and great books,
I also want to mention some great podcasts that don’t run anymore but were great. The Calls for Cthulhu videocast was great as was How to Succeed at being Evil. I also used to listen to Tee Morris a lot, but not so much anymore. I also listened to Crescent, but when I caught up to the new releases at like 20 or 25, I stopped listening and never picked it back up, which sucks because it was only like a 30 episode run. I also listened to the Frosty Heidi and Frank show, but stopped a couple of months ago.
I won’t go through the rest of my podcasts one by one that I’ve ever listened to since this has been boring enough and I don’t want to take the thunder out of the newest podcast on the Mike Schmidt Podcasting Network, “Podcasting, Cars, and Me with Jay Leno.” I do want to mention just two more though since they are rather unique to my podcasting listening. The Wormword audiodrama has a full cast of voice actors. Unfortunately, I haven’t listened to it after their season break, but I will eventually. Also, the TED Talks from conference of the same name (I’m assuming). I heard about them from the webcomic LICD, and figured meah, but they have some really great academic stuff.
Sigh… I wanted to break down the 3 podcasts I listen to, talk about Mike Schmidt’s Rocky with a Blog, and my own podcasting past and future, but that seems like an unlikely feet for 60 words. I guess this is basically going to be a concept album of a week here on the Bloggaday.
Well, I can probably fit in Rocky with a Blog as long as I make it one really long paragraph. It’s a concept from Mike Schmidt, who will be blogging about his own venture in weightloss (I promise, despite the last few days, the Bloggaday won’t become that), but last time he tried starting it, I was one of the folks who challenged him. Him and a few of his listeners were going to kind of have a running competition with weigh-ins and whatnot. As I think I mentioned in an earlier Bloggaday, I lost a bit of weight, but plateaued. I kind got to the point of needing to “get into shape” rather than “losing weight.” I’ve been at that point since mid-March. When I got an email from Mike saying he was going to be restarting Rocky, I figured, ‘hey, this a great time to kick into the next phase.’ So, as the wheels start turning for Rocky with a Blog, it’ll be interesting to see how it unfolds, and hopefully, Schmidt won’t get injured this time round.*
I just want to end by saying that while I’m not that sore from yesterday’s workout, my legs took one hell of a beating. Since there is work afoot and lots of walking to do today, that may get a wee bit interesting.

* While Mike Schmidt of Phillies fame was not terribly injury proned, Mike Schmidt of podcasting notoriety could apparently get hurt picking up a package at the Post Office.**

** And when I say “get hurt,” I of course mean get in a fight with a postal worker or random passer byer at the USPS store.
