Bloggaday 130 – Ginger Rice and Parmesan Sourdough

Bloggaday 130 – Ginger Rice and Parmesan Sourdough

A week or so ago I was watching Iron Chef America, and they had battle ginger. That means that each dish that the Iron Chef and the challenger cook must contain and spotlight ginger in them somehow.

Well, one of the chefs cooked some rice with slices of ginger in the water. I saw that and figured, “I like ginger ail. I should try that.”

A few days later, I actually made it. This was the first time I’ve worked with ginger, and I’ve got to say, I was surprised how good it smelled. It kind of smelled like lemon pledge, just not as cleanery. So I liked it quite a bit. Unfortunately, that’s where my joy with the ginger kind ended. I cooked the rice but wasn’t a fan. I ended up drowning it in some cinnamon and finishing it.

I’ve also heard that parmesan is good on rice, but given the sweetness of the ginger-infused rice, I figured cinnamon would be the better call for this one. Maybe in the future, I’ll try parmesan on some rice.

I’m not sure how good parmesan and rice will be, but I do like me some parmesan. It’s not that I really put parmesan on a lot of stuff, but what I do put it on, I like a lot of it. The only things that I can think of that I really like parmesan on are breadsticks and the like.

I’ve been a fan of Sizzler’s bread for years. A couple of years ago, I started making it at home every once in a while.* Sizzler’s bread is sourdough bread buttered with a butter/parmesan mix and grilled on a skillet. It’s even more awesome than it sounds.

Next, John’s Incredible Pizza is a buffet pizza place. Their breadsticks are sourdough, and they lightly butter it and dust it with some parmesan cheese. By some, I mean about ¾’s of a pinch per breadstick. So if they put more cheese on it, it would be better.

Lastly, Chuck E. Cheese breadsticks are also sourdough and parmesan cheese. On second thought, it might be pizza dough though, I’m not too sure. Whereas John’s incredible pizza breadsticks are individually cooked, Chuck E. Cheese just cuts up a mass of bread into the individual pieces.

I guess the point is, Sourdough bread + Parmesan cheese equals pure, yummy greatness. Yes, yummy.

Bloggaday 129 – The Funeral Job* Pt 3

Bloggaday 129 – The Funeral Job* Pt 3

“Hey, what’s the deal?” a voice came from across the room and cut into the rambling.

The two looked to a small girl examining a baseball. The boy cocked his head and dug into his pocket only to pull free a knob from one of the church’s banisters. The pair took turns looking at the two spheres before the girl finally acknowledged the room. Her foot inched from the crowd before she fell backwards into a run.

Throwing the knob to the ground, the boy dashed after her, leaving the woman at the center of the eyes in the room. “Kids,” she shrugged and hurried after them. By the time she made her way out of the church, the boy was catching up with the girl in the clearing of the cemetery.

The woman hopped from foot to foot to escape from her heels and ran after the pair. The two ran in circles and began looping back to her. As the girl got closer, the woman grabbed the squirming child. “It’s time to give up the ball.”

The girl chucked it at the boy and said, “Fine, here you go.” As the woman set her down, the child jerked away and continued, “It’s just a stupid ball. I thought it would be something valuable when I saw you sneak in after that man.”

The boy held the ball up before looking at them. “There’s only one name scribbled on here a bunch of times.”

“Let me see it,” the woman said as she snatched it from him. “Who the hell is Alec Hardison?”

The coffin lid swung open with an explosion of saw dust. Another boy, this one younger than any of the others, stood up through the artificial smoke. Couching, he fanned through the debris. He smiled and tossed up a ball before trying to catch it, only to palm it out to the pews. He jumped out of the cushioned interior and scooped up the ball. Spinning the it between his hands, he jumped onto the front row and leapt off of it, stumbling as he started for a window. His head bobbed from side to side as his gaze sprinted between the stained window and the ball. He wheeled back and hurled it through the glass.

Shards of reds, blues and greens rained down on the seal with a thunder louder than the bell high on the roof was ever capable of producing.

As commotion came from outside the heavy wooden doors, he inched closer to the window with crunching steps. He fingertipped the wall and stepped up into the window. As the first person burst into the room, he jumped free of the church and bellyflopped to the grass. The child moaned to his feet and cradled the ball before limping into a run.

As he began clearing the grass, yelling echoed from the church, but he ran right through the noise. What did stop him was the hook of a cane that caught his arm. The boy spun around, almost catapulting the ball. The man lurched forward through the cast on his leg and stole the ball from his hand.

“Ah man!” the boy complained. “Do you know how much work I did to get that ball? I literally spent all afternoon in a coffin!”

The man leaned against his cane and looked back at the church. “I doubt it was as much work as I did.”

The boy rested on his thighs as he finally began breathing. “That was some creepy stuff, man. I thought I would suffocate. I had to face my own mortality. Do you know how traumatizing that is for an eight year old, man?”

The man patted him on the shoulder as he walked by. “I think I have an idea.” As he tossed the ball in the air, he said, “I’ll see you around kid.”

Bloggaday 128 – Why Do Jean Pockets Suck?

Bloggaday 128 – Why Do Jean Pockets Suck?

This was going to be last Tuesdays post when I changed it up to cover the earthquake.

I’m a newcomer to the jean world. Only in the last year or so, I’ve started wearing them again. I don’t know if again is really the right word. I’ve never been a jeans kind of guy. Hell, I went a decade without so much as trying a pair of jeans on.

In the stead of the denim leg coverings, I went shorts. Hot, cold, I went shorts. Rain, sleet, snow, I went shorts. Sadly, that is literal and not an exaggeration.* But as we learned in Bloggaday 74, I’ve been growing up, and I’ve been moving into big boy pant territory. It is Southern California though, so it’s not always pant weather.

Besides the warmness of jeans, I do have another problem with them. I hate the pockets. Now you can get carpenter jeans, which have normal pockets, but the others suck. I’m guessing everyone knows what jeans are like, but I’ll describe them anyways. They open high and they’re tight. It’s inconvenient and rather limiting.

I know I’ve been a bit long on these Bloggadays lately, so I think I’ll just end this one here.

Bloggaday 127 – SotW 4

Bloggaday 127 – SotW 4

Chuck: Hello Bloggaday readers, and welcome to the 4th edition of the Song of the Week.*

Tom: Yes, folks, we here at the SotW are nearly a month old and we are loving it.

Chuck: Calm down, Tom, this is our first video, and we don’t want to scare off our potential viewers.

Tom: Alright, Chuck. (Smile)

Chuck: (Sigh n facepalm)

Tom: Let’s stay professional here, Chuck and get to this week’s Song of the Week

Chuck: That sounds great, Tom. This week’s song comes to us as the weekly free song from iTunes.

Tom: Well, I’m glad to see the humble beginnings some songs come from to become the coveted Song of the Week

Chuck: (Pause and look at him) Yeah, it’s amazing.

Tom: (Look back over) What?

Chuck: This is going on Youtube, not ESPN. Do you think you can tone it down a little? You’re lucky you didn’t get fired for last week’s outburst.

Tom: As I like to say, Chuck, Luck is the residue of design.

Chuck: (Continue looking) (Shake head)

Tom: I guess I’ll have to carry this edition of SotW. This week’s Song of the Week is…

“Wells”

By

The Expendables

Chuck: Congratulations, Expendables.

Tom: (clapping) Yes, good job. Unfortunately, they couldn’t be here accept the award.

Chuck: What are you talking about? We never have the band on.

Tom: Well this is our first video and it sounds better if it looks like we COULD get the band on.

Chuck: (look back to the camera) As I was saying, “Wells” was downloaded the week of May 16th as iTunes free song of the week.

Tom: And now they’re the Song of the Week for June 20th. Chuck, do you believe in miracles?

Chuck: I really wish you would have been fired last week.

Tom: Good to know, Chuck. (Smile)

Chuck: Well, that’s been week 4 of The Song of the Week. Thank you for choosing the Bloggaday for your music news and entertainment. You can find us at http://www.youtube.com/user/DavidDysart and the Bloggaday every week at http://thebloggaday.blogspot.com/ From Tom, Chuck and all of us here at the SotW, Have a great day and we hope to see you next week

Bloggaday 126 – Happy Father’s Day

Bloggaday 126 – Happy Father’s Day

Happy happy Father’s Day, from all of us you.

Happy happy Father’s Day… Wait, I think I might have messed that up.

Anyways, Happy Father’s Day folks, you know which ones I’m talking about. Unlike Mother’s Day, this particular holiday isn’t as conveniently pun-accessible.

I suppose I have my work cut out for this Bloggaday.

Being a father or a mother is big thing. Lots of responsibilities. Much more difficult than being an uncle I imagine, and I imagine myself as more of an uncle. I’m good at keeping kids pre-occupied and whatnot, but that’s terribly difficult. It makes it much easier when you pawn them off to their parents when they become shenaniganizers and don’t want to listen to you.

I imagine one day though, I’ll become a father, but that day is some time away. It blows me away that people successfully have kids when they are considerably younger than I am. I am nowhere close to mature enough to have and maintain a 5 year old. I don’t know, I barely manage going to school. I don’t know how I would structure my life if I had a kid.

Well, that’s enough pondering for one Bloggaday. I’d just like to say, happy Father’s Day to all of our fathers out. Have a good one.*

Bloggaday 125 – Post-PWND The Funeral Job*

Bloggaday 125 – Post-PWND The Funeral Job*

The man covered the last step to the coffin with a catch in his throat. “I know how much you always loved this ball, and every time I looked at it, I just think about that time at the bar. I don’t know. I always figured I would give it to you sooner or later, so I guess this is my last chance.”

The boy watched from eyes that crowned the wooden back as the man pulled a drawer free from the paneling. He looked it over one last time before letting it roll from his fingers. As it bounced into the deafening fabric, he slid it closed. Drawing in a ragged breath, he rested his face in his hands for a moment. He gave the coffin a quick tap and turned back to the doors. As he made his way down the walk, the boy rolled under the rows of pews.

As he heard the doors shut, he popped out and dashed for the coffin. He started feeling around the polished wood when the door opened again. He spun around to a woman standing in the arches.

“Oh, I’m so sorry, I didn’t know anyone was in here.”

As the woman started to back up, the boy said, “Yeah, I’m sorry. I’ll just be another minute.” With a nod, she was gone, and he was back at work. He finally felt a pop, and a drawer spat out. He was already turning and shutting it as he snagged the ball. Sliding the ball into his pocket, he ran for the door. As he arrived, he paused. He straightened the worn and oversized suit as he took in a breath. Swinging the door open, he made his way out.

The woman gave him a warming smile and took the door from him. She pushed it wide and made her way into the room, but the boy continued to stare at her as he began to trot backwards, a smile creeping up his cheek.

A bump broke his attention before the door had a chance to intercept his view. He caught a glance of blonde before the priest approached him. The boy brushed his own hair from his eyes as the older man said, “Ah, hello, Eliot. I’m happy to see you. I didn’t know you knew Nate.”

The boy gave the man a nod before his eye plummeted to his feet. “Not well, but I wanted to say good bye. He was a good guy.”

The man gave an agreeing nod and said, “Yes. It’s a tragedy to lose anyone before they’ve seen twenty, but it is especially hard with someone like him.”

A moment passed in silence before the woman split the two. “Hello, Reverend. Do you mind if I talk to out boy here for a moment?”

“Go right ahead,” the father said, offering her the conversation with his hands before leaving.

“Alright, kid. I want the ball,” the woman whispered sharply.

“Ball?” He took a step back. “What ball, and who do you think you are?”

She took a step to keep up with him and said, “My name is Sophie, and I’m his sister, and somehow, I doubt he would have wanted you to have that ball.”

“Sister?” he questioned as he bumped into the wall.

“Well, half sister. Same father, but different mothers. We just met a few years ago.”
