Bloggaday 134 – SotW 5

Bloggaday 134 – SotW 5

Chuck: Hello everyone. Tom, can you believe this is already the fifth Song of the Week?*

Tom: No, Chuck, it only feels like four SotW’s if you ask me.

Chuck: Yes, well to each his own, Tom.

Tom: Will you every STOP using clichés there Chuck?

Chuck: I doubt it, Tom. It’s just the kind of sports announcer I am.

Tom: Don’t you mean, “music announcer?”

Chuck: Good one there, Tom.

Tom: I really do try.

Chuck: You could have fooled me.

Tom: This exchanged has been a reenactment between Chuck and his wife last night.

Chuck: A little too close to home there, Tom.

Tom: Perhaps we should get off of your wife then.

Chuck: Are you settin

Tom: That exchange came from Chuck’s wife, Chuck’s milkman, and myself the night before last.

Chuck: …

Tom: …

Chuck: Anyways, this week’s Song of the Week is

“I Want to be a Billionaire”

by

Travis McCoy

Tom: And I want to be the first to congratulate them on this success in their career. This really could be a turning point for them

Chuck: Yes… Well… As a note to any potential viewers, there is some harsh language in the song.

Tom: What? Just a few f#@ks and a s#!t or two.

Chuck: Please! The language. We have to be professional to get the Performer of the Month gig.

Tom: Ah yes, the Performer of the Month Bloggaday will be coming Wednesday which we will be hosting.

Chuck: Well, we hop if you ca control yourself for more than 200 words.

Tom: And if you can stay on topic. I was about to tell the folks about tomorrow’s Bloggaday.

Chuck: I’m sorry, Tom. Go ahead.

Tom: Well thank you. Anyways, before that douchebag interrupted me.

Chuck: Oh, come on! I’ve got a mortgage and wife!

Tom: Alright. Tomorrow’s Bloggaday will be the first fitness report for the Bloggaday author.

Chuck: Well, we’ll just have to wait until tomorrow for that. As for today, I’d like to thank everyone for typing and reading the Song of the Week with Tom and Chuck. We’ll see you next week.

Tom: Well, I don’t know. You need to learn how to stay on topic, Chuck.

Bloggaday 133 – That’s What She Said Part 1

Bloggaday 133 – That’s What She Said Part 1

The actual joke is towards the end so you can skip this. You can’t miss it.

A couple of semesters ago, I took a Soc 100 class. It was a fun class. Not too intense, so the teacher wasn’t too strict in class. That plus I had a buddy in class, it allowed me to be sniper funny, which is just my way of saying that I would be an asshole and drop devastatingly funny one-liners in class. Unfortunately, I hate disrupting class (that’s just the kind of guy I am), so I don’t do it often, and even in that class, I basically didn’t say it much louder than my corner of the class could hear.

In this class though, our corner was I, a guy who is, in fact, that guy (a friend I met in another class), his friend who was somewheres between our two personalities, and a few other folks who didn’t necessarily disagree with our humor.

I tell you that just to build some groundwork, but I have some stuff to add, so I’ll try to swing back before the end of this Bloggaday.*

I’ll also add that I didn’t really have the teen years where I was part of a group that focused on the stupid humor perfectly epitomized by the “That’s what she said (TWSS),” joke. I ran into a few folks like that at Crafton though, and that’s kind of who’s here in Sociology class.

I will also say, I’m the kind of guy who will latch onto something funny and choke it to death by extreme usage and drive it right into the ground. Hell, the day of me writing this, I actually did that particular thing. Back to the timeline of the joke though. The (TWSS) joke was one of the things that I felt I was using a little too much, so I started reining it in a little bit despite its relatively common current usage in the group.

So me, the guy I know (Carlos), and his friend (Joshua) are working on a group project. I was talking to the friend after class, but Carlos was just kind of floating in the classroom. I was supposed to meet Josh on a previous day and work with him on the project. Since he worked in the Writing Center, he knew the folks, and it was cool if we met in there. So I show up, stick my head in, and don’t see him there. The Computer Lab is right outside of the Writing Center though, so I call his cell and leave him a message. I figured I would go on the computer and be able to see if he came in. A good chunk of time passes and I end up leaving. I’m not sure why I wouldn’t check the Writing Center again before I left, but I don’t remember if I did or not, so I’m guessing I didn’t.

Back to the situation of us in the classroom. As I said, Carlos was never in this conversation. He wasn’t sitting in on the conversation either. He was just walking around the classroom. The snidbit went something like this

Me: I showed up and stuck my head into the writing center but I didn’t see you.

Josh: I was there talking to someone. You didn’t have to just stick your head in there. You could have come all the way in.

Carlos (literally pops in at an angle out of nowhere): That’s what she said.

The setup was so perfect, and the timing was impeccable. I don’t know if he heard me and made his way over to tell the joke, but his ability to pop in from nowhere was brilliant.

Unfortunately, I’ve run out of words yet again to get to some of my one-liners from class, but perhaps on a future installment of the Bloggaday.

Bloggaday 132 – Cooler Than Me

Bloggaday 132 – Cooler Than Me

So the other day, I was getting some music for my niece and nephew for their trip to Florida. One of the songs they wanted me to get was “Cooler Than Me” by Mike Posner. As soon as I heard the name of the song, I thought, “Hey, I know that song from somewhere.”*

I started listening to it and thought, “Okay, well maybe not.” I move on and get to some other songs. A song later, I decided to listen to my iPod while I did it. I navigated to my purchased playlist, and the first song, the very top of the list? “Cooler Than Me” by Mike Posner…

Son of a bi

Now, it’s not like I just went out and bought it and forgot. I grabbed it as the iTunes free download the day before, so I had listened to it once in something of passing. Still though, it kills you. So stupid. It should have clicked more when I saw it. It’s a relatively distinctive song. Well, I can tell you this week’s Song of the Week is coming from this series of downloads.

Woo, this is a short one. Less than 200 words

Bloggaday 131 – UFC’s 6-Figure Contract

Bloggaday 131 – UFC’s 6-Figure Contract

As I’ve said in previous Bloggadays, I’m a fan of a show called The Ultimate Fighter. The show takes several non-bigtime MMA fighters and has them duke it out until 1 ends up victorious. That one final fighter gets the coveted “6-figure contract.”

Now I thought that was pretty good. 100+k a year for fighting. Not a terrible living. Aside from the winner, a select few other TUF’ers tend to also get that fabled contract with the UFC.

Well that was all cool and dandy until I found out about the actual specifics of the contract. I was actually rather appalled. Here’s how it breaks down.

“The winners of the first three seasons of The Ultimate Fighter competition, and certain runners-up depending on their performance in their competition finals, receive the touted "six-figure" contract to fight in the UFC. These contracts are specifically three-year contracts with a guaranteed first year. Each year consists of three fights, the first year's purse per fight consists of $12,000 guaranteed with a $12,000 win bonus (a maximum of $24,000 per fight), the second year's purse per fight is $16,000 with a $16,000 win bonus (a maximum of $32,000 per fight) and the third year's purse per fight is at $22,000 with a $22,000 win bonus (a maximum of $44,000 per fight). A TUF winner who goes 9-0 can earn $300,000 total on the contract, but only $150,000 is guaranteed for all three years if 9 fights are fought.[1]”

That means the least/most they can make their first year is $36/$72k. Second year? $48/$96k. And the third year is $66/132k. The most that they can win depends on whether they win their fights. So if they win every single fight and the UFC actually decided to keep them for the entirety of the contract, they can average $100k a year. If they don’t win and the UFC for some reason decides to keep them, they’ll AVERAGE 50 grand a year.

Okay, I’m watching the Ultimate Finale (the last episode of The Ultimate Fighter to determine the winner and a few other UFC fights) and it’s the second round of the Jardine/Hammil fight, and you know it’s a rough fight when the camera gets blood on the lens. I don’t see how that fight isn’t fight of the night.

Anyways, I understand they’re just fighting, but I imagine it takes a considerable amount of money to be a UFC fighter. I hear a lot of talk about the camps that they’re in, this world-renowned training. That and their conditioning and everything has to take a lot of money. These guys have to put on one hell of a show their first year so they actually get a second year and I can’t imagine 30 grand goes too far.

If the winner of their show only gets $36k for their first year, what do their nobodies get? I would imagine considerably less. As I’ve implied, after the first year of the 6-figure contract, the UFC can drop their contract, so if the contract holder isn’t winning, there’s not much reason to keep them if they can get some cheaper fight to lose fights.

Now the biggest counter to my point and the unknown variable to me are the sponsorships. I’m sure the folks who move on from the TUF house and other fighters in the UFC in general make a good amount of money from that. I don’t know, the contract itself just seems a little a little lacking*. Considering how popular the UFC is, it seems like they could pay a little bit more to their fighters.

Bloggaday 130 – Ginger Rice and Parmesan Sourdough

Bloggaday 130 – Ginger Rice and Parmesan Sourdough

A week or so ago I was watching Iron Chef America, and they had battle ginger. That means that each dish that the Iron Chef and the challenger cook must contain and spotlight ginger in them somehow.

Well, one of the chefs cooked some rice with slices of ginger in the water. I saw that and figured, “I like ginger ail. I should try that.”

A few days later, I actually made it. This was the first time I’ve worked with ginger, and I’ve got to say, I was surprised how good it smelled. It kind of smelled like lemon pledge, just not as cleanery. So I liked it quite a bit. Unfortunately, that’s where my joy with the ginger kind ended. I cooked the rice but wasn’t a fan. I ended up drowning it in some cinnamon and finishing it.

I’ve also heard that parmesan is good on rice, but given the sweetness of the ginger-infused rice, I figured cinnamon would be the better call for this one. Maybe in the future, I’ll try parmesan on some rice.

I’m not sure how good parmesan and rice will be, but I do like me some parmesan. It’s not that I really put parmesan on a lot of stuff, but what I do put it on, I like a lot of it. The only things that I can think of that I really like parmesan on are breadsticks and the like.

I’ve been a fan of Sizzler’s bread for years. A couple of years ago, I started making it at home every once in a while.* Sizzler’s bread is sourdough bread buttered with a butter/parmesan mix and grilled on a skillet. It’s even more awesome than it sounds.

Next, John’s Incredible Pizza is a buffet pizza place. Their breadsticks are sourdough, and they lightly butter it and dust it with some parmesan cheese. By some, I mean about ¾’s of a pinch per breadstick. So if they put more cheese on it, it would be better.

Lastly, Chuck E. Cheese breadsticks are also sourdough and parmesan cheese. On second thought, it might be pizza dough though, I’m not too sure. Whereas John’s incredible pizza breadsticks are individually cooked, Chuck E. Cheese just cuts up a mass of bread into the individual pieces.

I guess the point is, Sourdough bread + Parmesan cheese equals pure, yummy greatness. Yes, yummy.

Bloggaday 129 – The Funeral Job* Pt 3

Bloggaday 129 – The Funeral Job* Pt 3

“Hey, what’s the deal?” a voice came from across the room and cut into the rambling.

The two looked to a small girl examining a baseball. The boy cocked his head and dug into his pocket only to pull free a knob from one of the church’s banisters. The pair took turns looking at the two spheres before the girl finally acknowledged the room. Her foot inched from the crowd before she fell backwards into a run.

Throwing the knob to the ground, the boy dashed after her, leaving the woman at the center of the eyes in the room. “Kids,” she shrugged and hurried after them. By the time she made her way out of the church, the boy was catching up with the girl in the clearing of the cemetery.

The woman hopped from foot to foot to escape from her heels and ran after the pair. The two ran in circles and began looping back to her. As the girl got closer, the woman grabbed the squirming child. “It’s time to give up the ball.”

The girl chucked it at the boy and said, “Fine, here you go.” As the woman set her down, the child jerked away and continued, “It’s just a stupid ball. I thought it would be something valuable when I saw you sneak in after that man.”

The boy held the ball up before looking at them. “There’s only one name scribbled on here a bunch of times.”

“Let me see it,” the woman said as she snatched it from him. “Who the hell is Alec Hardison?”

The coffin lid swung open with an explosion of saw dust. Another boy, this one younger than any of the others, stood up through the artificial smoke. Couching, he fanned through the debris. He smiled and tossed up a ball before trying to catch it, only to palm it out to the pews. He jumped out of the cushioned interior and scooped up the ball. Spinning the it between his hands, he jumped onto the front row and leapt off of it, stumbling as he started for a window. His head bobbed from side to side as his gaze sprinted between the stained window and the ball. He wheeled back and hurled it through the glass.

Shards of reds, blues and greens rained down on the seal with a thunder louder than the bell high on the roof was ever capable of producing.

As commotion came from outside the heavy wooden doors, he inched closer to the window with crunching steps. He fingertipped the wall and stepped up into the window. As the first person burst into the room, he jumped free of the church and bellyflopped to the grass. The child moaned to his feet and cradled the ball before limping into a run.

As he began clearing the grass, yelling echoed from the church, but he ran right through the noise. What did stop him was the hook of a cane that caught his arm. The boy spun around, almost catapulting the ball. The man lurched forward through the cast on his leg and stole the ball from his hand.

“Ah man!” the boy complained. “Do you know how much work I did to get that ball? I literally spent all afternoon in a coffin!”

The man leaned against his cane and looked back at the church. “I doubt it was as much work as I did.”

The boy rested on his thighs as he finally began breathing. “That was some creepy stuff, man. I thought I would suffocate. I had to face my own mortality. Do you know how traumatizing that is for an eight year old, man?”

The man patted him on the shoulder as he walked by. “I think I have an idea.” As he tossed the ball in the air, he said, “I’ll see you around kid.”
