Bloggaday 243 – A Caption Narrative: Katanas 1-3 pt 2

Bloggaday 243 – A Caption Narrative: Katanas 1-3 pt 2

The Second Great Trigady starts tomorrow. There will be no interruption of SotW on Mondays or PWND (hopefully) on Wednesdays, but everything else will be clipshow content and of course original commentary until I finish it. Then, I’ll debut my new* post ender (all of the links at the end of each post.

Working on the hand guard (aka Tsuba). This was process 2. I used the saw from my pocket knife (a great gift from my brother) to create the whole. It's not the process I used for mine, so check it out for my refined style.

You can make the actual Habaki which keeps the blade snug in the sheath, but it looked insanely difficult, so I just shaped it into my blade.

I'll go into detail when I make my tutorial, but if you actually want to make one, here's a good tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeQzznWId

The sheath parts and little strip didn't line up, so I took a belt sander to them. This is my leg after about half the sander on the better of the two

This is how I held it, but I can't really recommend that. I think it may be a legal. proper use and all. You WILL sand you fingers occasionally.

On the bottom and top of the sheath as well as the tip of the handle, I placed square pieces so it would look cleaner. This is me working on the top part of the sheath

At this point, the holes looked terrible when I put them in the particleboard. I figured it would look better to just cut a U and then wood glue it to the end of the sheath. The seams look really nice after they are sanded. This added piece also makes sure it snug against the Habaki

Again, the kurigata. I'm using a VERY useful wedge shape piece of particleboard with sandpaper on it. If you do this, I highly recommend shaping a piece like this.

This is called the Kurigata. It's attached to the sheath to make the knot. I have to go back and at the to the first one I made.

Everything is cut our and marked for the handle

Kurigata up on top. I'm cutting into the sheath a little bit so it can sink in a little bit with i wood glue it. For mine, I cut all the way through.

This is now how I make all of my holes. I poke it with a knife until I basically have a dotted line, pull up a layer and just keep going. I also use the saw and sand paper dohicky

The swords put together. Each is about 23 inches long

I know they look small, but that's because I jumbo-sized the proportions to give a kid-friendly strength. They are actually like 23” each

The one with the heart tsuba is my niece's. The round on is for my nephew. It was kind of fun and not THAT hard to do the heart

The kids's swords. I made them, but they painted them (with help from me and my mom when they got bored.

Made by me, painted by my niece and nephew. I spray-painted both blades silver, but my niece decided to repaint it red. Not quite thick enough though.

I still have my Kakshi mask captioned out as well as the one on the kunai, but that’s all I have pre-loaded for the Caption Narrative.
